Recognizing data as the asset
DND’s path to modernization and future operational capability depend on quality data.
Digital Built RPS is moving in step with the Defence community as it aligns with a Government of Canada digital approach. In support of Strong, Secure, Engaged: Canada’s Defence Policy and the DND/CAF Data Strategy, we are looking to prioritize evidence-based decision making through accessible, secure and trusted data.
An enterprise data environment will allow us to manage data as an enterprise asset at the centre of operations. A growing collection of intuitive tools and apps for data discovery, analysis and other use cases will draw from this environment and present validated and relevant data to DWAN users.
Taking a data-centric approach
DND owns and manages an extensive real estate portfolio—and the wealth of data to support it. One of the challenges is defining a sustainable dataset to support the full spectrum of activities and honours the adage “enter once, use many times.”
The Real Property Spatial Data Warehouse (RPSDW) hosts core data, accessible via web services to DWAN users. Its integrated platform supports data entry, storage and access for real property land, infrastructure, building and equipment data. But it’s the accessibility to a core dataset, not the individual applications or tools, that provides immense value to users.
Tracking master business and spatial data
DND/CAF personnel enter real property assets into DRMIS and the RPSDW, our two enterprise systems that exchange master business and spatial data. As more assets are entered in these systems, a defined and sustainable dataset becomes available for daily business. The data schema is composed of land, site and infrastructure, building and equipment program data, which we are tracking as it matures.
Key milestones will include the validation of our real property asset portfolio, enabled accommodation tracking, and replacement cost analysis.
Sharing the benefits
Our enterprise data environment will support the daily operations of many divisions within ADM (IE) and CAF Bases and Wings. Through a secure login process, personnel will have access to on-demand web services to search, visualize, and analyze geospatial data related to infrastructure assets.
Beneficiaries accessing the enterprise data environment will include organizations and personnel responsible for maintaining and reporting on DND infrastructure assets. The enterprise data environment will be updated through an optimized work-order reporting system and data- exchange process to provide accurate information about infrastructure specifications, location and condition. Reporting tools will evolve to become more specific to user requirements as the data program itself matures.
Master Business and Master Spatial Data
Real property assets must be entered into DRMIS ERP and the RPSDW to validate master spatial data. This is not duplicated effort; both systems exchange information to ensure that once data is entered, it can be reused. All real property assets have engineering and location characteristics recorded in the RPSDW. Entry into DRMIS ERP ensures accurate maintenance and management of assets.
